Difficulties in Diagnosing Autism
Autism is a congenital disorder which means that it is present at the time of birth but it cannot be identified in infancy. It can be identified in early childhood by the parents and caregiver of a suffering child. It means that it takes more than two years or in some cases takes three years to be identified as a complete brain developmental disorder.
When such child reaches at an age where normal children start showing different reactions including liking, disliking, talking, playing, laughing, understanding the gestures of their family members, he does not show all these normal life reactions. This thing makes his family think over the developmental process of their lovely child and in this way they approaches child health care specialist or psychiatrist to get help in such confusing situation. If they succeed to diagnose autism early and start its treatment properly then it could be the best thing to improve the communication skills of a suffering child.
Chances of Wrong Diagnosis
Sometimes it becomes difficult to identify the presence of autism in a child because most of its symptoms correspond to that of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and therefore a mental health professional must be experienced enough to differentiate between the two different kinds of mental disorders because only an experienced mental health specialist can do it accurately.
Unusual Personality Skills
It is somehow interesting about the disorder of autism that its patients often show some extra ordinary and unusual personal skills which are hardly found in rest of the population. For example such patients have unusual sensory feelings, expertise in drawing skills, extra ordinary musical sense, quick calculation abilities and memorizing skills etc.
Autism and Social Isolation
It is also said that autism makes a person socially isolated and he starts living in a world of his own but it is not the case. It’s true that autism hampers social interaction, communication skills, understanding capabilities and learning potential of a sufferer but it does not mean that such patient becomes a house bound with no connection with outer world.
Autism in Teens
Teens suffering from autism often succeeded to get some control over normal life activities and to pursue successful professional career without being dependent upon others. It means that they become succeeded in getting control over themselves and in subsiding abnormal symptoms but as far as communication with outer world is concerned they show obvious symptoms of autism dependency in this matter and face severe verbal and understanding problems in dealing with others.
